Crown History - 1930's to 1950
Crown Equipment Corporation was started in the rural American neighborhood of New Bremen, Ohio, USA. The business has developed from a one-room outfit into a globally distinguished company, currently considered to be the seventh largest forklift maker on the planet.
The Crown company was founded in 1945 by two brothers, Allen A. Dicke and the late Carl H. Dicke. Carl’s son and Chairman Emeritus, James F. Dicke, joined the family business later that same year. At present, his son, James F. Dicke II, is Chairman and CEO. James F. Dicke III, serves as the company President these days, becoming the fourth generation of the Dicke descendants to maintain this position.
Now an globally diversified organization, Crown originally built temperature controls for coal burning furnaces, servicing a small clientèle. The production of these control units took place in a former hardware store based in New Bremen, Ohio, where Crown’s headquarters currently remain.
By the year 1949, Crown shifted into the construction of rotators for antenna due the greater fascination with televisions at the time. The product was able to improve the image and reception quality. The company’s successful move enabled them to become a leading producer of units until 2001. The company ceased production in October after a decline in the global demand for TV antenna rotators.
Crown History -1950's to 1975
In the early 1950’s Crown diversified into the production and repair of electronic and mechanical parts for government and private industry. After a number of successful bids inside a short period of time, the company had developed a highly regarded business in this field.
With such flexibility and success, Crown was able to diversify its production to include materials handling equipment. Crown started production of forklifts and lift trucks in 1957. The company believed the industry required a smaller line of superior quality lift trucks. Crown promptly produced an exceptional series of modern equipment and swiftly grew to be the most rapidly evolving materials handling company with its variety of merchandise.
By 1966, Crown had ventured into the foreign materials handling marketplaces by opening up shop in Sydney, Australia. Sydney is currently a regional headquarters for Crown for all Pacific Asian sales, advertising and marketing, and services. Crown remains an unwavering industry leader today, supported by exceptional operations, solid sales and solid production operations.
Two years later, Crown had moved into the European marketplaces by buying up an Irish manufacturing plant from a German Company, Steinbock. There they began to assemble PTH hand pallet trucks. Later on that same year, Crown began their first London operation located close by Heathrow Airport. The sales and service operation of Crown’s complete forklift line was offered in the UK by the end of the decade. In the early 1970’s, Crown expanded and began advertising and marketing forklifts across Europe through independent sellers.
